Another dispatch from the road
Wednesday was a fruitful day at the Izaak Walton Inn. Ten new pages, bringing Cap and Ball well into Chapter 3. An afternoon of trainwatching — this place is a great one for “foamer” railfans, for the crapped-out old road locomotives the Burlington Northern Santa Fe uses as helper engines tend to be rare models one doesn’t see anywhere else, such as the funny-looking GP30.
The veteran rail buff carries not only a camera but also a knife and fork. Last night the Rocky Mountain rainbow trout in the “Dining Car” restaurant at the Izaak Walton was first-rate, as good as anything I had on the old California Zephyr, where the chefs sometimes bought fresh trout from anglers along the Colorado River.
My only possibly negative observation is the humongous size of the meals. Portion control evidently hasn’t crept this far West, where men are men and dinner plates are the size of automobile wheel covers. And since my mama forced me to join the Clean Plate Club when I was a kid, I can’t help not leaving anything behind . . .
And now back to work.
